Port Openings Versus Onsite Servers

There can be confusion between Port Opening requests and Onsite Server requests, where the onsite needs to be set up on a port other than 80.

When determining what a customer really requires, the easiest way to work out what they are asking for is to identify the direction of traffic flow that is intended.

Onsites

Onsites are set up for inbound connections to the school from the Internet; if a school wants their onsite contactable on port of 6000 from a connection outside the WAN for example, then myinternet needs to set up a redirection for their onsite on that port.

Port Openings

Port Opening Requests ONLY relate to having a port opened on the router for outbound connections from schools to the internet; if a particular Internet site has to be accessed on particular port, and that port is not open by default for Schools to access, then schools must through their Department request that this port be opened.

Port Openings are a Fee For Service request and must have the approval of the relevant Department body before being submitted to myinternet. Prior to passing on the request via the Jobtracking System, it must have been decided how the resulting traffic is to be accounted for. All traffic is attributable to schools and router traffic is no different in this respect. There are two options:

  • Open a port and have the traffic accounted in traffic type misc - Requires One hour of Complex Support
  • Open a port and have the traffic accounted to a new traffic type - Requires Six hours of Complex Support
If we have concerns about the port that has been requested for opening, we will advise why and follow through with the requester.
